The sculpture was commissioned as a gift from the class of 1968 on the 50th anniversary of their graduation. The artist notes: "The origin of the word tides comes from Germanic origin, tiid in Dutch and Zeit in German, meaning time, relating the rise and fall of the sea. The sculpture contains three wave forms, referring to the three tiers of time --past, present, and future."
