Description:
Ornate Wayside Cross stands on a low square base. The work is a patriarchal or archbishop Cross, as it has two cross pieces of graduated sizes. An angel blowing a trumpet, a reference to the Last Judgement, tops the Cross. Ornaments on the north side from top to bottom consist of St. Christopher carrying the Christ Child. Below, at the intersection of the lower cross piece is a seated figure of a pensive Christ. The Lithuanian Coat of Arms stands below his feet. St. Casimir, patron saint of Lithuania, is carved in a niche above a seven-line form which represents the protective Columns of Gediminas. The last figure is Our Lady of Vilnius, which is copied after a 16th century painting of the "Virgin of the Gates of Dawn." From the top on the south side of the Cross is a figure of St. Anthony of Padua, patron saint of the parish. He is holding a child. An angel kneels atop the figure of the crucified Christ. A robed figure of St. Joseph stands in a niche below. The final ornament, the Mother of Sorrows, is on the bottom. Mary holds the crucified Christ in her lap. There is a large heart in the center of her chest which is pierced with seven swords.
