Description:
Cast bronze utility hatchcovers (manhole covers) with three different designs. One design features a relief map of downtown Seattle. Stainless steel buttons mark locations of sites of interest on the map. A second design features a Tlingit Indian whale relief. A third design features cartoon-like people around the edge of the cover, looking up (or down into the hole) at passersby.

Remarks:
Knight's hatchcover design, the relief map of Seattle, was the first to be commissioned and was funded through private donations. There are a total of 19 hatchcovers of Knight's design throughout the city. Jackson's design, the Tlingit whale relief, was commissioned in 1976 by the Seattle Arts Commission and was funded through Seattle City Light. There are 32 hatchcovers with Jackson's design located throughout the city. Edwards' design, the people peering down the manhole, was commissioned in 1987 and was funded through Seattle Water Department One Percent for Art program. There are 9 hatchcovers of his design in the city. IAS files contain related Art on File Fact Sheet (c 1994).
