Double portrait of Charles Henry Augustus Carter (d. 1879) and his wife, Elizabeth (b. 1821) seated together in their living room. Mr. Carter leans his right elbow on a table, his head resting on his hand, and Mrs. Carter is seated beside him, her arm resting on his leg. A lamp and books are on the table and several paintings hang on the wall. A window is at right. They lived at 11 Bleecker Street in New York City.
