    Remarks:
Both the SOS! survey report and the Cocke text "Monumental New Orleans" list the artist as unknown. IAS cataloger believes works may be by or copy after Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson's "The Hiker," because of pose and style of soldier.
Funds for the memorial were raised by the Louisiana Spanish American War Monument Commission, whose members included Judge Rufus E. Foster, James W. Godbery, and Fred W. Matthews. The monument was erected by Albert Weiblen Marble Granite Works. For additional information see Times-Picayune (New Orleans, LA) May 31, 1939, pg. 1, 6.
