    Description: 
    This large blue and green relief on the building's facade features the staff of Aesculapius (a staff entwined by a serpent), known as the symbol for medicine. Surrounding the staff of Aesculapius is the Hawaiian 'ape leaf (elephant's ear). In Hawaiian lore, the 'ape was planted near gates, and the leaves were placed under the mats of the sick, to ward off evil spirits.

    The relief is essentially an enlarged version of a concrete original by sculptor Roy E. King that is prominently located above the entrance on the Beretania side of the hospital's Mabel Smyth Building, now known as the Queen's Conference Center (IAS record number 78590035).
