    Description: 
    A standing portrait of George Washington depicted carrying out his first public mission in 1753, bringing a letter from the Governor of Virginia to the Commander of Fort Le Boeuf. He wears a British uniform, including an open, knee-length top coat, vest, and knee-length boots. In his extended proper right hand he holds the letter and in his proper left hand he holds his hat. The sculpture is mounted upon a tall square base that rests on a low square base.

    Remarks: 
    The monument marks the site of Fort Le Bouef which was built by the French in 1752. As a major representing the Governor of Virginia, George Washington came to the Fort in Dec. 1753 to warn the French to withdraw their forces from the region claimed by Great Britain. The monument was erected by the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, and the Town of Waterford, Pennsylvania.
