Remarks:
Sculpture serves as a grave marker for Chief Sitting Bull (1831-1890), whose remains were brought in 1953 to this, the site of the Sioux chief's birth and death. Prior to that, Sitting Bull was buried in Fort Yates, North Dakota. The City of Mobridge contributed $15,000. The rendering of Sitting Bull is based on an 1883 photograph by R. L. Kelly. The granite for the bust is from Thunderhead Mountain, the Black Hills site where the Crazy Horse monument (IAS 76008568) is in progress. In 1985, the bust was restored by Jack Shillington, who created the commemorative plaque which stands nearby. IAS files include related articles from "Milwaukee Road Magazine," Oct. 1953, and the "Wi-iyohi," the bulletin of the South Dakota Historical Society. v. 7 no. 7 (Oct 1, 1953). IAS files also contain newspaper clipping from The Washington Post, July 8, 2007, pg. A-3, discussing plans for larger memorial complex.
