    Remarks:
The memorial marks the final resting place of "Hambone," one of the Army's last and most well-known field artillery mules. The albino mule was featured in a Life Magazine article in July 1949. He retired with the 4th Field Artillery Battalion in 1956, and gained notoriety as a champion jumping mule and rodeo performer.
The memorial was funded by civilian friends of Ft. Carson. The memorial was built by C Company 52nd Engineer Bn, based on a sketch submitted by Division Artillery draftsman SP4 George Kelley. The $220 bronze plaque was donated by members of the Mule Team of the Al Kaly Shrine Temple. Landscaping was planned by battalion S3 Capt. Otis L. Durham. IAS files contain articles from The Mountaineer (Colorado) dated April 30, 1971; May 14, 1971; and March 29, 1974.
