Description:
The grotto is a 15,000 square foot installation that encompasses the Shrine of St. Elizabeth and two shell-shaped alcoves. In the first alcove, a robed figure of Mary stands above a waterfall and to her proper right St. Bernadette kneels on a concrete stairway. Water in the waterfall is circulated from a concrete basin containing tree trunks and roots sculpted from concrete and stucco. In the second alcove, there is an altar of concrete and stucco. The apron of the shrine is a neatly fashioned riser lending to the "wooden-concrete" theme with likewise fashioned railings and kneelers. One smaller rail is sculpted with an "M" for Mary with the rustic appearance of wooden-concrete. The approach to the shrine is paved with pink flagstone.
