Cincinnatus served as dictator of Rome during the attack of the Aequians in the 5th century BC. He resigned the office to return to farming after the invasion was repulsed. Cincinnatus is the City's namesake. The City of Cincinnati was named by Governor Arthur St. Clair, a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, an order of Revolutionary War officers. Previous plaque on the front of the base read: THE SPIRIT OF CINCINNATUS. The face of the figure is said to be that of the artist's.
