    Provenance:
Formerly located Washington and Lee University, On top of Washington Hall, Lexington, Virginia 1844-1990.
    Remarks:
This wood figure was removed from the top of Washington Hall in 1990 because of the figure's deteriorating condition, and was used as a model for a bronze replacement figure (VA000002) made by Branko Medenica in 1992. The bronze replica was dedicated on May 8, 1992, and installed on top of Washington Hall; this wood original was heavily restored and relocated to Leyburn University Library. IAS files contain copies of newspaper articles from Roanoke Times and World News (Roanoke, Virginia), April 18, 1990, which discusses the removal of the original wooden figure; and Ring-tum Phi, May 7, 1992, which mentions plans from the dedication of the bronze cast of the figure.
