Dates:  1933-1936. Dedicated Oct. 5, 1936. Digital Reference:  Medium:  Variegated Indiana limestone. Dimensions:  2 reliefs. Each: approx. H. 12 ft. x W. 13 ft. Description:  A pair of figurative groupings in relief flank the entrance of the library. Both groups consist of two adults and a child at the center. The group on the south pylon symbolize life, its beginning and continuity. The male figure holds a scroll and a book and represents Philosophy and Biography. The female figure represents History and Religion and carries a sword and two tablets. One of the adults on the north pylon relief represents Art and Social Science as indicated by a statue, palette and set of scales. The other adult is Science and Literature with a lightning bolt and a book. The child holds a lamp of knowledge in both hands and walks towards the light away from night and darkness represented by an arc of stars.
