    Remarks:
Commissioned in May 1953 by the employees of the American Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO) for $30,000, in memory of John Joseph Eagan (1870-1924), the Company's founder. Idea was initiated in 1952, having grown out of an original suggestion of a plaque placed on Eagan's grave. Sculpture was commissioned after a year of planning with the assistance of the Birmingham Museum of Art in selecting a sculptor. ACIPCO employees raised funds for the statue, and the Company paid for the base, landscaping and foundation. Monument was dedicated in commemoration with the Company's 50th anniversary on the 85th birthday of John Joseph Eagan. IAS files contain information connected with the dedication including programs, correspondence and a related article from the Birmingham News, April 24, 1955. IAS files also include a letter to employees which contains a sketch of the proposed monument, the contents of the cornerstone, a narrative history and a chronology of the monument, photocopies of historic photographs of the statue's creation and additional information.
