Washington Monument Commemorative Stone: Continental Guard of New Orleans, (sculpture). Artist:  John Stroud & Company, carver. NEW ORLEANS signed Description:  The stone is carved in relief with a small emblem depicting a pelican with wings spread atop a neck containing four baby birds. Above the pelican's head is a banner inscribed with UNION JUSTICE AND CONFIDENCE. Surrounding the nest are carved branches of locust trees and sugar cane plants. Below the emblem, the stone is incised with names of 163 members of the Continental Guard of New Orleans. The stones were donated by states, cities, towns, organizations, individuals, and foreign countries in honor of George Washington. The Continental Guard of New Orleans donated the stone, which is located at the 270 ft. level.
