Description:
Full-length portrait of Peter J. McGuire. He is seen standing with proper left arm against chest and proper right arm, elbow bent, at waist. He is dressed in a frock or mourning coat in the fashion of the late 19th century. Behind the sculpture is a free-standing curvilinear colonnade of six Greek Doric columns in the same material as the sculpture.

Remarks:
The memorial commemorates Peter J. McGuire, founder of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. He also served as Secretary and later Vice President of the A.F.L. which he helped to found. The memorial was dedicated in August 1952, 100 years after his birth and it marks his burial site. IAS files contain fact sheet from Arlington Cemetery. Inscribed on entablature frieze of colonnade: IN MEMORY OF PETER J. MCGUIRE FOUNDER OF UBC AND FATHER OF LABOR DAY. (Below the base of the colonnade is inscribed:) ERECTED BY UNITED BROTHERHOOD OF CARPENTERS AND JOINERS OF AMERICA 1952.
