Description:
Six panels each with an incised outline of a reclining figure in profile. Each figure represents a different academic discipline and next to each figure is a small symbol of that discipline. "Industry and Business" is a winged male with a industrial smoke stack nearby; "Crafts" is a female with a draped statuette nearby; "Science" is a male with a symbol of the sun and stars nearby; "Arts" is a male holding a painter's palette in one hand and a sculptor's mallet in the other, and nearby is a classical column; "Literature" is a female reading a book with a symbol of a flame and lamp nearby; and "Knowledge" is a male reading a book with a symbol of a compass nearby.

SOS! survey included an Art Commission of the City of New York Work of Art form which notes that preliminary approval for the purchase was given on Sept. 12, 1960 , but final approval of the design was given on June 18, 1959. Not all of the figures are visible in the photographs on file in IAS.
