Each figure represents a different academic discipline and next to each figure is a small symbol of that discipline. "Industry and Business" is a winged male with a industrial smoke stack nearby; "Crafts" is a female with a draped statuette nearby; "Science" is a male with a symbol of the sun and stars nearby; "Arts" is a male holding a painter's palette in one hand and a sculptor's mallet in the other, and nearby is a classical column; "Literature" is a female reading a book with a symbol of a flame and lamp nearby; and "Knowledge" is a male reading a book with a symbol of a compass nearby.
