Remarks:
Mary Beecher Longyear commissioned this sculpture in February 1922 to honor Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science. The artist read and was inspired by "Science and Health Key to the Scriptures" when he was modeling the sculpture. Although the sculpture was completed in 1922, it was placed in storage for more than forty years and was not publicly displayed until 1966 when it was installed on a brick terrace overlooking the formal garden at Longyear Historical Society. It was installed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Christian Science. Bela Janowsky designed the base. IAS files contain a copy of the Longyear Foundation Quarterly News 3 (Spring 1966) which notes that the sculpture was cast in 1922.
