    Remarks: 
    One of two murals (see also IAS record 66400074, Tobacco) on the building done by the artist through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Section of Fine Arts of the Public Buildings Administration of the Federal Works Agency. The new post office cost $450,000. Schmitz was paid $6,000 for the reliefs. Ellett was the consulting architect and Simon was the supervising architect. Schmitz designed and modeled the relief murals, and contracted with Hirlund for the carving. IAS files contain related 1940 correspondence with the artist regarding subcontracting work.
    IAS files contain related excerpts from Tristate Magazine, Dec. 14, 1986, pg. 12-17; and Kentucky Post, Nov. 22, 1940 and March 25, 1994. The image that appears in the Nov. 22, 1940 edition of the Kentucky Post is reversed.
