The competition was funded by the Colorado Council for the Arts and Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts. The sculpture's location was decided after the announcement of the award. For related articles see: Gazette Telegraph (Colorado Springs, CO), Jan. 5, 1985. The marble was quarried near the village of Marble, Colorado; the mining rail is from a mine in the Breckenridge-Colorado area.
