Remarks:
The monument was initiated in 1876 with seed money from the balance of a wartime fund. In 1898, the McNaughton Post No. 625, Grand Army of the Republic renewed efforts to erect the monument. The Village contributed $1,000 and additional funds were raised through public subscription. The final cost was just over $2,000. There is a time capsule buried in the cornerstone. IAS files contain related articles from the Caledonia Advertiser, June 12, 1975 and July 3, 1975 and the names on the monument.
