    Description: 
    The central element is a sarcophagus with a large bronze bas-relief depicting a fire engine drawn by galloping horses. The sarcophagus is flanked by allegorical figures representing Duty and Sacrifice. Duty is a seated female holding a fireman's cap and embracing a child. Sacrifice is a female holding in her arms a dead fireman. The monument also includes an approach of steps, a platform with balustrade, and a fountain basin.

    Remarks: 
    Funded by city government and public subscription. The sculpture cost $90,500. It was a gift to the City of New York by the Firemen's Memorial Fund Committee who commissioned Magonigle and Piccirilli to design the monument. Piccirilli created the bronze relief and the Magonigle created the allegorical figures. IAS files contain drawings of the memorial. Original drawings of the memorial are on file at the Olmstead Center, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Flushing, NY 11368. Additional documents regarding the memorial since 1912 are on file with the Art Commission of the City of New York. A preliminary design report on the reconstruction of the memorial and adjacent landscaping is available at Jan Hird Pokorny, Architects and Planners, 306 East 51st Street, New York, NY 10022.
