Formerly located Near G.A.R. Hall, at Route 303 & Riverview Road, Peninsula, Ohio 1889 until 1932 or 1933.
    Remarks:
The monument commemorates the 141 Civil War soldiers who enlisted from Boston Township, Ohio (now known as Peninsula). The monument cost $3,000 and was a gift from Arthur Latham Conger (a Civil War veteran, Akron businessman and politician) and his wife Emily Bronson Conger, both Boston Township natives. The monument was erected through the George L. Waterman Post, No. 272, G.A.R.
It was originally installed outside the G.A.R. Hall on Route 303 in Peninsula. In the early 1930s, it was damaged in a car accident and the head of the soldier decapitated. Because of traffic concerns, the monument was relocated between 1932 and 1933 to its current site at Cedar Grove Cemetery (also known as Locust Grove Cemetery).
IAS files contain a photocopy of the 1889 and 1989 dedication programs for the monument, which include an Honor Roll list of names engraved on the base. IAS files also contain related newspaper clippings from The Beacon Journal and other sources.
