Description:
A Civil War soldier stands dressed in a uniform and greatcoat. A blanket or cape hangs over his proper right shoulder. He wears a cap with bill. He holds a rifle in front of him, butt downward, proper left hand over proper right hand. The sculpture is mounted upon a base consisting of a rectangular block of Missouri Ozark red granite with a cornice and stepped bottom made of Barre granite with rough-hewn accents.

Remarks:
The sculpture was installed by the Woman's Relief Corps and the George V. Rawson Post No. 46 of the Indiana Grand Army of the Republic in honor of Michigan City Civil War soldiers. The sculpture was dedicated on May 31, 1926 in conjunction with Memorial Day festivities. The sculpture and base were fabricated by the Indiana Stone & Supply Company of Michigan City under the direction of president, Schuyler Powell, and secretary-treasurer, J. Harold Powell.
Nearby plaque on left side of base reads: ON FAME'S ETERNAL CAMPING GROUND,/THEIR SILENT TENTS ARE SPREAD,/AND GLORY GUARDS WITH SOLEMN ROUND,/THE BIVOUAC OF THE DEAD. Nearby plaque on right side of base reads: THE MUFFLED DRUMS SAD ROLL HAS BEAT/THE SOLDIER'S LAST TATTOO/NO MORE ON LIFE'S PARADE SHALL MEET/THAT BRAVE AND FALLEN FEW.
