Remarks:
In 1872 the town of Rochester appropriated $3,000 to enclose the Common and erect a monument. The monument was dedicated on Sept. 6, 1872. In 1884 the monument was deemed unsatisfactory and a new appropriation of $3,000 was made. Hussey designed and built the granite base for the new monument using part of the old monument as well as new granite. The sculpture was purchased in Chicopee, MA by members of the monument committee. An additional $500 was appropriated the following year to cover remaining costs. IAS files contain transcription of names listed on monument. IAS files contain related article from Rochester Courier, Dec. 26, 1884; excerpts from David Ruell's unpublished manuscript "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire", Concord: New Hampshire Historical Society, 1980, pg. 12-13; Franklin McDuffee's "History of the Town of Rochester, NH", 1892, pg. 233-236; and "Rochester Annual Report", 1885, 1886.
