PUTTING HONOR AND DUTY ABOVE SAFETY THEY SOUGHT NOT GLORY BUT THE GOOD OF THEIR COUNTRY AND HUMANITY. ERECTED BY THE GRATEFUL CITY AND PEOPLE OF TORRINGTON. (Ten additional text plaques) unsigned
Description:
Octagonal pedestal is topped with a smaller octagonal pedestal which serves as a flagstaff. Four additional markers or wings protrude from the corners of the octagonal form, creating surfaces for commemorative plaques. The base of the flagpole is an urn-shaped structure. The work stands on an elevated terrace.

Remarks:
Erected by the City of Torrington shortly after World War I for $20,000. The granite is from Crotch Island, Maine. The monument originally contained tablets dedicated to Torrington citizens who served in the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish American War and World War I. These inscriptions were written by Rev. Chauncey Linsley, rector of Trinity Church, Torrington. Plaques have since been added for World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The monument is listed as a contributing object in the Downtown Torrington National Register District. IAS files include the text of the plaques.
