Provenance:
Formerly located Mitchell House Hotel, Thomas County, Georgia 1800s-1910.
Acquired Italy late 1800s.
Remarks:
Fountain was originally imported from Italy in the late 1800s. It stood in the garden of the Mitchell House Hotel until 1910. It was presented to the citizens of Thomas County by the Mitchell family and was placed on the south lawn of the courthouse. In 1987 it was dismantled and removed to the workshop of Dwight Hume for restoration. The crane is newly sculpted, made to replace one missing for many years; other birds on the fountain were reconstructed and restored. Basins, collar and column were sandblasted as part of restoration work. IAS files contain related articles from Thomasville Times Enterprise, Dec. 17, 1987 and Thomasville Landmarks, Inc. Newsletter, Nov. 1987.
