Description:
John Henry Cardinal Newman, the English Cardinal for whom Kansas Newman College was named, stands in eccelesiastical dress. He wears a small cap, or zucchetto, and an Anglican collar. He has a short cape, or mozzetta, over his cassock with twenty-six buttons. At the waist is a sash with a fringe that comes almost to the bottom of his robe. He has a long, open cape over his garments. Cardinal Newman wears an ornate Pectoral Cross, which was given to him when he was made Cardinal in 1879. His proper right hand is in a motioning gesture, and his proper left hand holds the Book of Knowledge. The figure is placed on the highest part of a planted rock garden which contains a small waterfall and is surrounded by a cement walk.
