A female California grey whale lies on a sand knoll in the front of a small city park. The whale is constructed of a wood frame covered with strips of lathe and a layer of cement. Three dimensional details (eyes, mouth, etc.) are created in cement, while one-dimensional details (barnacles, etc.) are painted on.

The sculpture was commissioned by the Museum Association, as a replacement for one that had been on temporary exhibit. The sculpture was created as a children's play object, an educational tool, and to stimulate interest in conservation issues. Children and adults climb, sit, and walk on the back and tail of the whale.
