    Remarks: 
    In 1895, the Michigan Senate commissioned Edward Clark Potter to execute this portrait of Austin Blair for $7,200; the total cost of the monument including the base and installation came to $9,791. The base was designed by the architectural firm of Donaldson and Meier. The base was constructed by C. W. Hills of Jackson, Michigan. In Jan. 1989, the sculpture was removed for conservation by Venus Bronze Works, Inc. IAS files contain a Feb. 24, 1989 condition assessment and treatment proposal by Venus Bronze Works, Inc.; newspaper articles from The State Journal (Lansing, MI), Jan. 8, 1989; Jan. 19, 1989; and May 5, 1989; two press releases --one marking the Jan. 19, 1989 removal of the sculpture for conservation treatment and the other marking the May 4, 1989 return of the sculpture; and an excerpt from George S. May's "Michigan Civil War Monuments," Michigan Civil War Centennial Observance Commission, 1965, pg. 8 and 31.
