Katherine Johnson graduated Summa Cum Laude from West Virginia State College (now University) in 1937 with bachelor's degrees in mathematics and French. She went to work for NASA (then the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) in1953 as a research mathematician known then as a computer. While at NASA she calculated the trajectory for Alan Shepherd's historic 1961 space flight and the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the moon, and she verified the first electronic computer flight calculations for John Glenn's 1962 orbit. The statue was dedicated one day before Katherine Johnson's 100th birthday.
