    Remarks:
The donor of the fountain, David Wallach, who died in 1894 stipulated in his will that the interest accrued on a set sum be used to provide a fountain in the park for man and beast. It took nearly 40 years for his request to be fulfilled. Elisabeth Haseltine Hibbard created the animal, and her husband, Frederick Hibbard, designed the fountain. The Chicago Park District Monument and Sculpture Photographic Archives contain black and white photographs of models and original sculpture. The Chicago Park District Monument and Sculpture Preservation Files contain photographs of alternate designs, miscellaneous correspondence, and conservation treatment reports with slide documentation. The 1992 SOS survey reported the medium of the fountain base as granite while the Bach and Gray publication noted the medium as marble.
