Remarks:
Sculpture was created to commemorate the historic handshakes between U.S. Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr., former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Russian Defense Minister Sergey Fedorovich in 1987, and between President Ronald Reagan and President Mikhail Gorbachev in 1988, which marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War. The sculpture was created in duplicate as a gift to the Russian and American people. One sculpture was presented to Mikhail Gorbachev in 1988. The sculpture was a gift of Mrs. Frank Hendler through the offices of Mr. Edward Winchester. IAS files contain a copy of the sculpture's dedication program.
