Description:
A granite commemorative marker with a relief of a Civil War cavalryman astride a galloping horse. The horse and rider are shown in proper left profile. The soldier holds the reins with his proper left hand, his proper right hand raised with his sword drawn. The soldier has a moustache and wears a cap. Near the top of the rough-cut back of the marker is the State of Ohio seal. The marker has a slightly rounded top and rough-cut sides, and is mounted upon a short, rough-cut, rectangular base.

Remarks:
The monument commemorates the involvement of the 1st Ohio Cavalry, Lieutenant Colonel Valentine Cupp commanding, Long's Brigade, Crook's Division, Cavalry Corps at the Battle of Chickamauga during the Civil War. It was placed by the State of Ohio and veterans and marks the position held by the regiment during the battle. The cost was $1,470. The monument was erected by E. F. Carr & Company. The State of Ohio seal was sculpted by Charles Henry Niehaus. IAS files contain: an excerpt from Jack Kerr's "Monuments and Markers of the 29 States Engaged at Chickamauga and Chattanooga," Collegedale, TN: The College Press, n.d.; a copy of Georgia Historic Resources 1988 form, Historic Preservation Section, Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The monument is on the National Park Service List of Classified Structures No. 03107. IAS files contain a copy of the LCS report form.
