The sculpture was created by German immigrant George Bauman, with Frank Beck of Jasper, Indiana, and Mr. Heim of Tell City, Indiana. Bauman had completed a treacherous ocean crossing in 1847 and vowed to erect a cross near the church of his future congregation if he survived. Joseph Gramelspacher funded the sculpture. In 1928, it was destroyed in a storm.
