Spring - Burning Trees in a Girdled Clearing, Western Scene, (painting).
    Dates:
    ca. 1841-1842.
    Medium:
    Oil on canvas.

    25 3/4 x 20 1/4 in. (65.4 x 51.5 cm)
    Description:
Scene is a forest of dead trees with figures working in a clearing where the trees have been girdled (a strip of bark is cut around the tree to prevent the sap from ascending which eventually kills the tree and causes it to fall). A girdled tree is seen clearly in right foreground, the cut in its bark and the exposed roots, on the bank of a stream. Two trees are fallen at center: one still with its roots. A boy stands where the trees are crossed. A man stands holding an axe to one of the trees. Smoke rises from a fire at center and nearby are the oxen. Eventually the trees with be burnt. A building is behind the trees, in the distance.
