    Remarks:
Bill Crawford, 1932-1980, reported the arts and entertainment beat for The Lawton Constitution for a quarter of a century and served on numerous local and state arts organizations. Candice Earley, who was encouraged early on in her career by Bill Crawford, went on to star on Broadway in "Hair," "Jesus Christ Superstar," and "Grease," as well as a sixteen year run as Donna Beck in the TV drama "All My Children." The sculpture was commissioned by the Bill Crawford Memorial Fund Committee. The Bill Crawford Memorial Fund was established to assist qualified performing arts students with scholarships. Thirty-two students were assisted in all. Candice Earley helped raise the money for the fund by donating her time and performing musical revues and cabaret acts for sellout audiences. The sculpture was funded with monies remaining in the fund when the committee decided to disband due to a fading response for the scholarships. The committee, wanting to ensure the memory of Bill Crawford, decided upon a gift to the city in the form of the sculpture. Donated by the artist, allowing the sculpture to cost less than half of the $120,000 estimate.
