Remarks:
IAS files contain a copy of Meriden's World War Memorial dedication program which gives a detailed description of the piece and its dedication. IAS files also contain a copy of the Record-Journal (Meriden, CT), April 3, 1982 discussing the restoration of the piece. The monument was conceived and built as the lynch pin of a new Memorial Boulevard, a landmark in Beaux-Arts city planning in Connecticut. Cianfarani is reported to have said the design of the shaft design was suggested by the flag, the flutes being the stripes, with stars grouped at the top. The city bore the cost of the monument and part of the boulevard, in the amount of $106,000. The state underwrote the major cost of the boulevard, to the extent of $700,000. In 1982, the memorial was determined to be in need of conservation, sandblasting occurred and the original patina was removed.
