Remarks:
The sculpture was funded by the Herman Lee and Nell Stuart Donovan Endowment. The sculpture serves as a tribute to John Tuska's thirty year career at the University as an art professor. The project evolved from a proposal the artist originally submitted in 1985. The sculptures were created under the direction of art department chair Jack Gron, with the help of student assistants, among them Scott Oberlink and Andrew Marsh. The work was cast at the University of Kentucky foundry. The artist's son, Seth Tuska, installed the piece on facade of the Fine Arts building in July of 1995. The sculpture's premise, according to the artist, is "the joy of human experience and of the human spirit." The dedication of the sculpture, on August 25, 1995, kicked off the 20th anniversary year of the College of Fine Arts. IAS files contain a copy of the dedication brochure and articles from Ace Magazine (Sept. 1995); and the Herald-Leader (Lexington, KY), Aug. 26, 1995, pg. C1, C3.
