Remarks:
The monument was erected on May 12, 1888 in honor of the Centennial celebration of Meadville and Crawford County. The relief of the log cabin on the base honors Meadville's founder, David Mead. The foundation of the monument contains a time capsule that includes articles describing the dedication ceremony. The time capsule is an air-tight copper box given by A. Grindrod and J. P. Hailwood who built the monument's foundation. IAS files contain excerpts from the centennial edition of the Daily Tribune - Republican, May 12, 1888 (Reissued May 12, 1983), pg. 22-32 and pg. 88.
