    Description: 
    A standing portrait of Christopher Columbus holding a rolled up map in his proper right hand. His proper left hand is raised to his chest. A short pedestal is to his proper right and a pile of large books is just behind him. The sculpture rests atop a square base.

    Remarks: 
    This was the first Columbus statue in the south and was the first monument in Richmond to have night illumination. The idea of Frank Realmuto, this statue was sculpted, erected and financed entirely by Virginians of Italian birth.
    The monument was a gift of the Sons of Italy in Richmond, Virginia, erected at a cost of $25,000. Albert Grappone of the Grappone Monument Company provided the base for the monument. IAS files contain an article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Dec. 10, 1927 and an article from the Virginia Cavalcade (Autumn 1992): pg. 84-95. IAS files also contain entry from checklist "Outdoor Sculpture Survey, 1986, Richmond, Virginia, prepared for the Stauary Study Committee by Tricia Pearsall."
