    Owner:
Fontana Cement Company, 890 Montauk Highway, Bayport, New York
    Provenance:
Formerly located Anchorage Inn, Montauk Highway at Kennedy Avenue, Blue Point, New York
    Remarks:
The sculpture is a local landmark from pre-automobile days in Suffolk County, New York. It was originally installed outside the Anchorage Inn (Ye Olde Anchorage Inn), in Bluepoint, New York. It has been attributed to Will Graham, owner of the Anchorage Inn, and was placed there by 1897.
The sphinx remained on site after the Anchorage Inn was destroyed by fire in 1928; and the property converted to a service station. In 1974, the sculpture was moved to its present site at the Fontana Cement Company in Bayport. At that time, it was restored. The present exterior facing dates from about 1975. IAS files contain excerpts from Gene Horton's "Blue Point Remembered," Sayville, N. Y.: Searles Graphics, 1982, 54-56; and Long Island Forum XLIV (April 1981): pg. 69-74.
