This sculpture is a polymer replica made from a mold of the original sculpture, which stood on Thomas Gould's gravesite until the spring of 2001. Boston born sculptor Thomas Gould carved the original sculpture in Florence in 1878, later sending the sculpture to America for a tour to attract new patrons, and to demonstrate his proficiency. After Thomas Gould's death, the sculpture was installed to mark the sculptor's gravesite on the grounds of Forest Hills Cemetery. In the spring of 2001, a mold was taken and a polymer replica was cast. The replica was placed on the Gould gravesite and the original sculpture was moved indoors to protect it from the adverse effects of the elements.
