    Description: 
    A stele engraved with an image of the space shuttle Challenger surrounded by portraits of the seven astronauts who died when it exploded on Jan. 28, 1986. The stele tapers to a point at the top and rests on a low rectangular base. The stele is flanked by two benches, seven evergreen trees, and two flagpoles. Around the perimeter are seven metal plaques each stamped with the name of one of the seven challenger astronauts and the names of those who donated funds.

    The monument was erected to the memory of the seven astronauts who perished aboard the space shuttle Challenger on Jan. 28, 1986. John Day of Day & Applegate Monument Service designed the monument. Beck & Beck, Inc. engraved the monument and Guy Gorriero planned the overall design of the park. IAS files contain transcription of nearby metal plaques. IAS files contain an illustration of the engraver's mark.
