    Remarks:
The monument was erected in 1910 by the German-American Alliance. The sandstone shaft had once been a column in the portico of the original 1843 Summit County Courthouse, which was demolished to make way for the present building in 1908. The shaft was topped by a cast spread eagle perched on a stone orb. In 1938, a bronze plaque with a bas-relief of John Brown was placed on a large round-arched panel of stone set into the low, open octagonal wall surrounding the monument. The city of Akron rededicated the memorial during the sesquicentennial in 1975, but the eagle, which had been destroyed in the tornado of 1943, has never been replaced.
