The sculpture was a joint project of all of the classes of the Yates Magnet School, with artist-in-residence Douglas Culhane overseeing the project. All students submitted maquettes for consideration for the final design of the sculpture. The maquette done by James Ginter, then a fifth-grader at the school, was ultimately selected. Culhane made wire armatures for the sculpture and students helped place and form the concrete. Children at the school are encouraged to have "hands-on" experience with the sculpture.
