Description:
A stylized, cubist-like figure of Don Gaspar de Portola, dressed in military uniform, consisting of long-tailed jacket, hat, and high boots, stands holding a sword down to his side with his proper left hand and a rolled document in his proper right hand. The figure stands atop a two-tiered base in a plaza setting.

Remarks:
Captain Don Gaspar de Portola, born in Balaguer in the Catalonia region of Spain, was the first governor of California, the founder of San Diego, and Monterey, and the discoverer of the Bay of San Francisco on November 4, 1769. The figure of Don Gaspar was presented by the Honorable Jordi Pujol, the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia to the people of the State of California and the Governor, George Deukmejian on November 5, 1988. Nearby sign reads: PLACA DE/CATALUNYA.
