(On base, front:) DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY/OF THE HEROES WHO FELL/AND THE PATRIOTS WHO/FOUGHT FOR UNION/AND LIBERTY 1861-1865/ERECTED 1889 GAR (Names of the citizens of Warren who served in the Civil War and the William Payson Post are listed on the sides) unsigned Founder's mark appears.
    Description: 
    Columnic memorial structure stands on an upper and lower pedestal and tiered base. Decorative elements include an anchor and a book and crossed cannons with three stacks of cannon balls on the ground, at the corners.

    Remarks: 
    Commissioned under the auspices of the William Payson Post, Grand Army of the Republic. The Town of Warren appropriated $800 for the work and an additional $1,000 was raised through public subscription. The final cost was just over $1,800 plus $.11 per character. IAS files contain a survey form from the Maine Olmsted Alliance survey of Historic Designated Landscapes and an unpublished paper which lists the names on the monument and gives detailed dimensions.
