    Remarks:
Barbara Hepworth created this work in memory of U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold, who was killed in a plane crash in 1961. The artist felt that it embodied her feelings "about his life, his nobility, his intense unity as a person." The piece was commissioned in 1963 by the United Nations through a grant of 85,000 dollars donated by the Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Foundation. Harrison & Abramovitz designed the base plinth and George A. Fuller Company executed the design for the base.
