Description:
Sculpture consists of three groupings of figures installed on a four-tiered planter. The center figures are a nude male and female. The female is held aloft by the male and holds an upraised torch in her proper right hand. A bronze ribbon loosely encircles the figures. To the left sits a woman in Classical dress supporting a nude child, who looks up at the central grouping. The child is positioned similarly, with his proper right hand upraised. To the right sits a scribe or historian (an old man with a long beard and heavy cloak). He holds an unfurled scroll on his lap, on which he writes with a quill pen held in his proper left hand. He sits in a block-style chair with carved animal arm supports. The old man represents the past, the central couple the present, and the mother and child the future. The planters are on the south, west and north sides and there is a bench at each corner.
